In 1990s the concept of self-esteem was regarded as important in the debate on human rights education in Japan. But the concept of self-esteem is unclear and ambiguous as some researchers pointed out. The author examinted the concept and evaluated its historical meaning in the light of the tradition of Dowa education. The concept of self-esteem highlighted hte importance of inner logic and process of children's consciousness raising. But at the same time it slighted the social dynamics of consciousness raising. He proposes that the concept of resilience will promote the theoretical development of Dowa education and human rights education
